Yesterday I said I was working on some photos I took of my dad. I started using GIMP 2 on my newer laptop and then this morning I remembered the photo editing site Phixr. I like Phixr because it has a lot of interesting filters to help mediocre photos. It also gives me ideas on what techniques I can use in my photo editing and as well as paintings.
So, this is one of the pictures I did using GIMP 2.
I put a blue overlay there….I liked this photo when I took it. And I’ll still work with it some more.
This next photo I did with Phixr.
I really liked how this turned out. I think it tells more of a story and has a sense of atmosphere.
I have a small collection of candid photos I took of my father. He doesn’t like having his photo taken but I ask and he concedes. I did the photos in an attempt to try to understand him better. He doesn’t always talk about what he is going through. In any case, I’ve been trying to edit the photos (taken with the camera phone) and it has been interesting.
I haven’t done this kind of work in quite a while so nothing is looking right to me. I hope to have one I am happy with by this evening.
I am happy to report that I have been painting a lot more. Well, I have been digital painting a lot more. I still feel strange calling that painting because I am not using actual paint (I know, I have issues) but I have doing some really nice and interesting things. I really like experimenting with light and color and shapes in ways that most people cannot (or are not prepared to) relate with. I’m not a photo-realistic artist. I am more of an abstract expressionist (if you had to put me in a category)…I think. Sometimes, my work looks more impressionist like. I work from a very internal, surreal, subconscious space. Almost dream-like… here is one piece I finished the other night:
Touching, 2012 Digital Painting KBrown
I’ve also been editing some photos I took while still in Japan. I feel a little odd posting them after such a longtime. I think the distant between what I was going through at the time and now is helping me cope with not doing all I wanted to there. I tried not to take such “touristy” photos. There are more photos I want to go through, but here is one I am particularly proud of. I did do some “digital” enhancing via photo filters, but not too much.
I like taking photos. I wouldn’t call myself a photographer. If I did, I would be pretty amateur. But this current trend toward old school Lomo/Holga/Insta film look and feel is something I can no longer ignore. It is almost like a backlash to the super realistic 3D digital cameras or something. So, I’ve been testing my creativity using some photos I took this weekend and using lighting/color/camera effect filters in a photo editing program.
I’m pretty happy with the results. Here is just one of my creations:
Since almost everything that is electronic now has camera, everyone fancy themselves a photographer. Which is fine. Whether you are an amateur or professional, we all want to capture that moment. Some people have a natural talent for photo composition and framing. Other people not so much. Why do I mention this. Filters. The world of photo editing and filters has turned into kind of an art form. When to use which filter. Holga or Lomo? Lighting effects. The art of applying filters to make an image “pop” or tell more of a story than what is really going on.
Giving photos personality? Hey pretty flower, what is your story??
Easter is right around the corner and I feel the need to do a fun Easter project. It will be a photo project…using..Peeps. Peeps come in so many colors…oh it will be awesome. I’m in the process of getting my ticket to Japan. I can’t wait to get there. I know it will be hard, but I am looking forward to the challenge.
